Important Questions In Life (Part 4 - Final)

I ended my last post with this point that when we care, we have to care sensibly so that we are not being taken advantage of when doing so. Here is the story that I would like to share to illustrate this point.

In the woods there lived a fierce, vicious and mean lion. Everyone was afraid of this lion because he liked to bite other animals and human. As the lion grew older, he started wondering what happens to lions when they die. He heard of a holy lion who lived on top of a hill nearby who is very wise. So he decided to go ask the holy lion. When he arrived at the holy lion’s cave, the holy lion was conducting a sermon. He quietly hid in a corner to listen. The more he listened, the more he was convinced that he had been a bad lion and decided to turn over a new leaf. At the end of the sermon, he went up to the holy lion and vowed not to bite or hurt anyone again. He wanted to be good, kind and caring.

After he became a good lion, he told everyone about it but the other animals and humans were still afraid of him. One day, while the lion was taking a nice nap behind a rock, a villager accidentally stepped on his tail when walking past. The lion had a shock awakening. However, he just smiled at the villager kindly without even getting angry. From that day on, everyone believed him and was no longer afraid of him.

On day, some nasty children came to tease him. They started calling him bad names but the lion just sat there calmly even though he didn’t like it. The children became braver since the lion was passive. They started to throw stones at him. He was upset but didn’t fight back because he had vowed not to hurt anyone again. So the children went nearer and then started beating him with sticks. He took all the beating and thought that religion was crap. In the real world you had to be nasty to protect yourself. So that evening, he went up to see the holy lion and wanted to renounce his vow.

The holy lion was shocked to see the poor injured lion and asked what happened. So he told the holy lion everything and blamed the holy lion for all the impractical teachings he had given. The holy lion then said to him, “You stupid lion! Yes I told you not to bite or hurt people but I didn’t tell you not to roar, did I?”

So, sometimes in order to be kind and to care, we have to “roar”, but just don’t “bite”! :-)
